Digital smile design, also known as DSD, being developed in 2007, by dentist Christian Coachmen has impacted how dentist have prepared treatment plans. DSD is a treatment planning tool which digitizes a patient’s smile to facilitate aesthetic restorations and improves the quality of predictability throughout treatment. This multi-use treament planning tool is one of the latest and top-tier technologies in dentistry. Advanced dental technologies are paving the way for more sophisticated and enhanced dental treatments. Smiles are now digitized due to the accuracy that these digital tools can provide for treatment planning and for dental aesthetic solutions.
According to the book, Ronald E. Goldstein’s Esthetics in Dentistry, the many benefits of DSD are:
Accurate aesthetic analysis
Increased Communication among the interdisciplinary team
Feedback at each phase of treatment
Patient understanding and marketing tool
Dynamic and effective treatment planning presentation
Educational tool
(Coachmen et al., 2018, p. 86-87).
Digital Design Smile uses measurements, symmetry, facial and smile analysis to design a smile the patient wants. Implementing the use of this treatment plan can be effective and beneficial to your practice, but it can appear risky. DSD is a systematic approach that facilitates the design of a patient’s smile. Dentistry is not only transforming smiles, but the harmony of the smile with the rest of the face. DSD strengthens the facial aspects and dental aspects of a patient to ensure the wholeness of the patient’s face.
